Mode of action

A sophisticated combined process of water vapor and ozone is decisive for the success of the treatment. Due to its chemical instability in ambient conditions, ozone (O3) disintegrates to form molecular oxygen (O2), a main element found in the air that we breathe. This means that the Oxy3 produces the amount of ozone required for treatment on the spot. At the end of the treatment, it makes sure that the remaining ozone is re-neutralized (O3 to O2). This means that the vehicle can be put back to use immediately after the treatment.

In combination with ozone, the water vapor used produces active oxygen and moistens the surfaces with condensate. The moisture and the active oxygen ensure that any other organic odorants bound to the surfaces (i.e. cushions) are broken down and that pollutants (such as carcinogenic PAHs) are effectively destroyed. The depth of penetration into the surfaces depends on the type and the texture of the surface. 

Nevertheless, so-called in-depth cleaning – for instance all the way into the foamed material of the seats – cannot be guaranteed with the use of the Oxy3.


The performance in figures

PAH breakdown in a PPE jacket

The accredited analytical laboratory in Vienna ESW Wruss carried out the PAH analysis of a PPE jacket. The 16 "EPA PAHs" were analyzed, which are representative of the entire group of substances according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The results after just 90 minutes of treatment are as follows:

-Upper and lower material completely decontaminated.
All PAHs broke down below the OEKO-TEX guideline values and many of them even below the detection limits (see illustration).

-Membrane decontaminated.
15 out of 16 PAHs are broke down below the OEKO-TEX guideline values and in some cases even below the detection limits.

Mechanical testing of the PPE jacket

The extreme load test showed that the tear resistance of the outer material of firefighter clothing exceeds the strength required by the manufacturers. This means that the upper material of the firefighter clothing retains its protective properties even after 30 treatments with Oxy3 (10 days in a row, 3 times a day). In addition, the reflectors and hoop and loop fasteners are still in perfect condition.

What distinguishes the Oxy3
from conventional ozone generators?

The Oxy3 is the only device on the market that works with the combined process of "ozone, active oxygen and water vapor".

Conventional ozone generators use air to produce ozone with oxygen found in the air. However, air only consists of 21% oxygen, with the rest being nitrogen (78%) and trace gases including miscellaneous environmental contaminants (1%). These substances also have to go through the ozone generator. Thus, the formation of undesired substances (gases) such as nitrogen oxide is unavoidable. Nitrogen oxide often leaves behind an unpleasant odor in the interior of a vehicle that can only be removed by a lengthy airing out. Nitrogen oxide is quite hazardous (toxic) for humans and the environment. Conversely, the Oxy3 only receives the purest of oxygen from an oxygen cylinder. This ensures the generation of highly purified ozone and any hazardous by-products are avoided up to 100%.

At the end of the process, the Oxy3 harmlessly eliminates the remaining ozone; the vehicle can immediately be used again. Inconvenient and lengthy airing is no longer necessary.
